Does anybody know of a breeder of The Korthals Whirehaired Pointing Griffon in Ontario? The closest to home I've found is in Quebec. After many years of careful decision I've finally decided that this breed will be my next and probably final dog.

Where ever you get your dog, make sure the breeder tests for PRA and dysplasia.

Like many medium and large breeds, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is prone to Hip Dysplasia, which causes the head of the hip bone to no longer fit comfortably into the cup provided by the hip socket, causing lameness and arthritis-like symptoms. A similar condition called Elbow Dysplasia also affects the breed but with less frequency. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) provides certification of breeding stock to help prevent the spread of these diseases, among others.
Various eye maladies can also affect some Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. Entropion and Ectropion (inward or outward turning eyelids, respectively) both exist in this breed. Entropion causes the eyelashes to rub against the lens of the eye causing extreme irritation; Ectropion causes the eyelids to droop, which exposes the eyes to infections and collection of debris. Griffs can also be affected by cataracts and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), a degeneration of the retinal resulting in eventual blindness." quote
You're not going to find a breeder in Ontario. I frequent an excellent Versatile dog forum. Many folks have a WPG. They could tell you of reputable breeders , maybe in Michigan or NY State.

Any reputable breeder will certify their breeding stock against these aliments, as they are common to most sporting breeds.
No breeders in Ontario. If you have spent years researching the breed, don't sell yourself short buy basing your decision on distance to the breeder.
The breeders in Quebec are some of the best in North America. I got my first Griffon in Quebec and have a deposit for my second in Quebec. PM me if you are looking for more info.
And maybe have your own eyesight tested too - problem I have with WPGs is, when retrieving, it can be awfully tough to tell where the beard ends and the bird beginsQuote:

Think this one has all the clearances Sharon advised and then some, by way of Washington State. Really enjoying working with this pup - 4 mos. old, got a water entry like a Lab, and already putting paws to use on the odometer in getting out front of the guns and seems to be naturally steady to flush and shot. Reason the coat's wet in the shot above is the pup had just retrieved ducks and chukar before having a first go at pheasants.

Mine came frome Lacewing Kennels just north of Marmora (north of Belleville), 9 years ago. I have not been able to connect with their old web site URL for a while and believe they are no longer breeding WPGs.

If they are no longer breeders, then try either Quebec or Alberta.
I may do a "drive by" in the next weeks and will let you know what I discover. I am curious on a source for pups as well.

I don't know if anyone has answered you but the only breeder in Ontario was a gentleman named Frank Miller from Marmora. I purchased my WHPG from him and about a year later he was gone. Frank bred great dogs, mine is now 10 years old and still acts like a two year old. Awesome dog love him. The only other breeders that I have heard of are the people in Quebec and there is a lady in Alberta that breeds them. Good luck, you won't be sorry.Quote:
