For those of you that know the Ottawa area, Larose Forest is one of the nearest public hunting grounds.
There are tons of coyote tracks in there. Do you think that is the main reason there are no (or very few) rabbits in that forest?
I want to try hunting coyotes in there in hopes of helping the rabbit population. Do you think it'd be a worthwhile effort?
Sorry I thought you said close to hunting. Yeah I would give it a try.
I fixed it so it's more clear.
But yeah, is that forest the type of habitat that would normally hold bunnies? I don't know what it was like before the invasion of coyotes.
I havent hunted there, but I know a few fellows that have with little to know success for rabbits or grouse.
try the area of larose closest to the town of lefevre, best bet for yotes in my opinion. set up a bait pile.

There are pockets in the forest with lots of rabbits (hares actually), but since a lot of the forest is monoculture plantation, the are huge areas that hold no rabbits. If you can find the sections with lots of rabbits, the hunting is actually very good. I've found it to be marginal for grouse, but I don't hunt it much anymore because I have some private land to hunt that has good populations of both grouse and rabbit.
I wouldn't hesitate to hunt coyote there, but I have no experience hunting them.
Last time I called the Prescott-Russell counties (owner of the Larose forest), I was told hunting was prohibited but that they had no enforcement officers other than OPP.
I have since stopped hunting Larose.
No. you can still hunt there, off limits someplace near Orleans and Rockland border.
