I was told that this past week was the last week Hullet would be releasing pheasants so my dog, wife and I braved the early winter storm and went out on Saturday. We stayed clear of the youth pheasant hunt and went for a walk (I heard lots of shooting up there so I hope we got some new young addicts!) .
My dog, Addi (on her first pheasant hunt) was having a great time running around while I was busy trying to stay warm! Then she went on hard point in some thick cover. As I eased in front of her I saw this nice -bird jump up, run for the open field and take off in flight, well out of range and even visibility. Addi never moved, what a good girl.
I released her with 2 taps on the head and away we went into the field. She went on point again about 100 yards down the rolling field and again when I got close the bird ran over a hill and hunkered down out of sight, this time without taking wing. We were afforded one more chance on this thing as Addi went on point 50yds over the hill. This time we got a royal flush out of the bird as it took off into the sky. I made contact and down it came in a heap. With 2 taps Addi was off and returned to hand with her first ring-neck, and what a beauty! Addi worked for it but third times the charm!
I had to make a good story out of it cause we only saw this one bird. ;)
