I am considering the feasibility of an archery cow hunt this fall due to the very impossible chance of getting a bull tag in the near north area. Is it even possible to hunt them with a reasonable amount of success? What would be a good technique? I know they are very skittish with a calf by their side. As anyone had success in taking one with archery?

I find them near impossible, unless you do a spot and stalk or call a bull in that has one with it. Its a competitive time of the year. I have had cows lead bulls away from us before. I myself would just stay in pool one. Just my opinion, Im sure some have had better luck then me with cows.

Exremely hard to do - Like the previous posts say. Most cows lead their bulls away like jealous lovers. Spot and stalk might work - I wouldn't know because we're always calling. The 2 we got were just passin by.
If all I had was a cow tag I wouldn't go! I would put in for elk or go for caribou or spend a month bear huntin!
We've had lots of other guys come into our camp and some only had a cow tag. I have yet to see it done.
I've heard that bringing up bushels of apples and getting a bait going does work but how much time would it take ??

I only had one cow in archery range in the thirteen years I have been hunting moose. And I missed her clean. I hit a small poplar half way to her. I called her in using a calf in distress call after listening to her tramp around me for two hours. I had a cow this year that would answer my call every time I called but she never came within 300 yards or so.
Spot and stalk might work. Or just finding a heavily used travel route and plant in your butt from dark to dark.
Not during hunting season / scenarios, however I have spotted them on many occasions, and with calves, and have managed to get quite close to them, or using soft calls have them come out to investigate me, all with what would be in bow range and long enough to get a shot off.
That could all change come hunting season though.

Been bow hunting moose same spot since only a few townships in a wmu were open for archery. I have called in cows following in a bull coming to the call. We had the odd cow just pick the wrong time to walk by one of our group. Any tag is better than staying home on the couch. Last cow we shot was 2 years ago. Get to know the area you hunt and make sure you have moose there. We bow hunt moose even if we only have calf tags and we have shot one of them to.
