Hey Guys,
my oldest will be turning 10 soon and he wants a bow. I used to shoot when I was a kid - but I haven't picked up a bow in over 20 years, so long ago that I don't know a thing about it.
any tips and suggestions on makes and models would be appreciated.

You should have a look at the bear apprentice it is highly adjustable. At 10 he will be doing a lot of growing in the next few years so you will want a bow that can be adjusted as he grows draw length adjusts from 24"-30" or close to that and draw weight from 30-60 lbs or close to that I bought one for my wife as she just wanted to give it a try. It was 300$ ready to shoot (sights rest stabilizer and sound dampeners on the string) and for the price point it works very well. But your best bet is to go to a good bow shop to get measured up properly and pointed in the right direction as far as form and any tips on shooting. Most shops will let you shoot some bows and help with proper form.
I followed Fishinchris's path with my 11yr old...We love the Bear apprentice 2...But don't kid yourself..at 10, your boy might be under powered to draw this thing.
My boy shot 2 seasons prior with a Genesis bow, and got to learn finger shooting, and the important basics first..
Depending on your childs needs, I would opt for either of the two.. The Genesis is a great intro bow, with very light draw, and the Bear Apprentice has a cool factor, that jumps him into hunting within the next season or two...

You might want to look at the Bear Outbreak, can be adjusted easily without press, 15-70 lb, 16-30 inch draw, good little bow.
