pet insurance for hunting vs non hunting dogs

Hello Everyone,

I am wondering what type of insurances are there for dogs. How much do they cover per year and how much do they cost per month. Does the insurance gets you discount on drugs, vaccinations and pet food. What is the cheapest insurance and what it covers and the most expensive and it's coverage? Does the insurance give discount or cover neutering/spaying? Does the insurance cover in both Canada/US? What happens if your dog bites someone, does the insurance cover the damages? Is purebred and mutt/hybrid insurance different or the same.

I know I am asking too many things, but want to know what is out there and what should I be expecting from an insurance company. I asked the same question in the other forum to get more info and knowledge about pet insurance and see the difference between hunting and non hunting pet insurance.

I had it for my dog initially but after all the bs when making a claim I opted out.If you have a beed that is healthy and you feed it the proper food and you execise the dog you might be better off without it.I think there is a tendancy to run up charges,perform uneccessary tests where insurance is available.In the event of your dog biting,I believe your home insurance would come into play.
I get my dog his check up, shots and revolution supply for the year and thats it $220.00

I have pet insurance on my lab through Petsecure. They have different levels of coverage depending on what your needs are. Our lab has a stomach issue ever since she was a puppy and she is now 6 years old. She is on medication every day and a special diet. We submit the paperwork to the insurance company twice a year and have had no trouble. My wife and I thought about cancelling the insurance but decided to keep it incase something happened to our dog that might be expensive and the insurance would cover the expense.

I use : info@ petsplusus.com for my JRT only. Others are too old to start now. After two $3800. surgeries on one setter, and $1200.00 on setter #2 for a mass in her throat, .I decided to go this route,
and the JRT is very accident prone - hyped out of his mind. :) Always into something.

$60.00 a month for 80% of almost everything. One deductible of $200.00 that you pay once in the life of the dog. Co pay is 20% .

$7500. of accidental and illness coverage annually.

I always believed in just saving before , but after that $7600.00 over a two year period for one dog , I realized I couldn't save that much.

Can't remember if there is a "hunting dog" clause in that policy.

Just re-read the policy. They don't cover accidents/ illnesses that result from "the pursuit of prey". I'm very sure that JRT will never be pursuing prey. :tongue::silly:

edit : On further reading , they will cover a hunting dog but you will have to pay more, as the possibility of accident is greater.

Wife and I contemplated it, but her yearly fee's are minimal and if she should ever need something, at that point we'll pay whatever the costs, we're already forced enough to pay into stuff we hope to never have to use, that we figured pay per use on the pup would be the way.

Giving a portion back for services you didn't use, require, or render, now that is a noble way of thinking, to bad that's not a corporate thought :)

The term "insurance" has everything to do with risk. Why would a company who is in the business of making money, give it back?

I believe it all depends on the package u get. I have never got insurance and never really needed it... until I needed it. now I regret not getting insurance. if you don't get insurance just keep in mind that you have to be ready to at the unexpected moment put your dog down or put out thousands and thousands of dollars

FnH, so what has changed? How long have folk, especially landowners/farmers had dogs? Why does this sound like a new aspect of pet ownership? Something HAS changed! Hmmmm........ now what could have come into play of late to effect such a significant transition in pet care?
