.45 Poly Patches

I saw these for sale on eBay during the winter so I thought I would give them a try.

They are a sabot type ball patch....kinda of neat.

The ball sits in a cup, spru up...the bottom is a cup.

Beign as it was a rainy day, I set up inside my Range Shack and give set the panel at 25 yds just to see where they were hitting first.

I'm using .440 ball with .45 poly patch at 25 yds with 60 gr of Pyrodex.

Then the rain really started to come down, so I called it a day...

So overall I'm impressed with these Poly Patches. They load a little looser that the cloth patch, but I assume the cup must seal up the gases better. At least the accuracy seems to be there, at least better than I was getting with the patch/ball.

Still having a hard time sighting...hard to see the target...or hard to see the rear sight...one or the other :)

Would the "Poly-Patch" grip the ball tightly enough for hunting purposes?

It doesn't appear to grip the ball at all Pete, unless during the ride up the barrel the gases cause the cup to grip the bottom of the ball. As you can see from the pic, it really looks like it's just cradling it.

Not much need to put a spin on a ball....that .45 CVA barrel is really slow, only a 1:66 twist rate so it doesn't give much.

Looks like it will punch a nice size hole out to 50 yrds !!!

Looking at it I wonder if it would keep the ball in a muzzle down position? It looks pretty precarious. No questioning the accuracy at 25 though. Good shooting Mike.

I did a google search on them and didn't find too many good reviews on them. ??? I think I would use with caution.

Yea, I saw those reviews myself....but it's like anything, take them with a grain of salt.....hey for $5...I'll try anything for giggles :)

I will try a tip/dip down the next time to see if the ball stays seated...if it rolls out of the patch to easily I'll just throw a cover wad over it....like I do with by BP 12 ga. I put the shot in a shot cup and then cover it with an overwad....keep the shot from rolling out.

Sorry Pete, I missed the drift of your question...yes I think if I was trouncing around the bush hunting with it, I'd put an overwad above the load.

I'm forever checking full size conicals to make sure they are seated too.

Your right, it would beg the notion when they are heavy and coated with a lubricant...you'd want a tight fit.
