Almost got in trouble.
I was sitting in my blind the other day , just thinking about when I was stopped by the CO last year.
He asked if my gun was plugged and I said yes of course, and it was, he said he did not have time to check and let me go on my way.
So I thought I had better test it out while sitting there, guess what I could get an extra 3 inch shell in it.
Oh shi t what's going on.
When I got home I checked it out and found that the wooden plug had broke inside.
Took it out and replaced it with a piece of plastic coat hanger it was the perfect fit about a 1/4 inch dia.

Is it a Mossberg? A couple of guys have mentioned that the wooden plugs need to be oiled periodically or they will dry out and break.

Mine 870 has plastic one. No need to worry...
-
YES its a mossberg 500, but now has a plastic plug.
-
Mine broke before,Ialways try to put an extra shell in , to be safe. brent.

My follower broke on my 870 this weekend and the spring ejected into the receiver. Had to remove the plug and spring in order to get my round out. Turned it into a single shot for the weekend.
-
A buddy of mine was sold an 870 without a plug in it. Always double check when you buy a new shotgun.
-
Better have a look at mine. Always give the gun a shake to hear it but never though of it breaking. Thanx for the reminder.

Ive got a Mossberg 500 as well. Forf whatever reason it seems like it is maybe half an inch short of the overall magazine length. So anytime I turn the gun up or down I can hear the plug move around
