Called my vet to book my dog (90 lb male lab)in to get heart guard and Advantix I was told he needs to have a test done to make sure he doesn't already have heart worm so the test plus the heart guard plus a summers supply of Advantix they told me is 360$ Seems like a lot just wondering what others have payed as well as opinions on the 2 products and if I should be considering and alternative to either one?
That's about what I pay. Considering the consequences of not getting it ; I consider it worth the money. Over the years, I have found both products to be totally effective.
Works out to $60.00 a month. I pay more than that on coffee. :)

That sounds expensive to me. Revolution isn't cheap and I paid about $140 for it (6 month supply, covers heartworm as well), and about $30 for the blood work.
I won't be using Revolution ever again after my experience with it last summer.
Edit, I guess if you throw in 50-60 for an office visit you're up to around the 250 mark, but still, 360 sounds steep.

Vet visit : $73
Lyme vaccine: $35
Rabies: $20
Snap/Heartworm test: $43
Heartguard: $75
all in $250.....if you add the Advantix ( which we don't use) the bill would be close to $350....
So no you not far off at $350....cheap once a year to have your pet cared for and protected from harm..$30 a month or $1 a day.
I hate the spring. A few years ago I was paying over $800 for 2 dogs but a new vet bought the clinic and dropped his prices. I know pay just over $800 for 3 dogs. This includes a "multi-dog" discount. You can shop around and get other prices but you are not far off.
I paid around $130 for Advantix II and somewhere @ $75 or the heart gaurd. So what you are billed is not unusual. Don't cheap out on the flea/tick preventative. Advantix II is excellent. My dog hasn't had a flea or tick since switching to it and we hunt areas that are pretty thick with them.
$350.00 x3 dogs here - minus 20% for being old (me , not the dogs). My husband has promised to stop complaining. :)
I am paying about the same. You can't skip the test, because the consequences of treating an infected dog are potentially fatal. It's a necessary evil.

It doesn't prevent ticks from attaching to your dog. Last summer I pulled 3 ticks from my dogs ears, and that was just from sitting on the lawn. She wasn't out and about much last summer due to bone cancer, and I know the ticks were bad last year but I've never had any of my pooches get them on the lawn. Cass mentioned pulling about 50 of his pooch while on Revolution as well.

In fact, it isn't meant to work on ticks, except for the dog tick. That's in the product literature. But I think a lot of people expect that it does.
