moose hunting in wmu 17

Hi everyone,new to forum but have read lots of posts on numerous topics.My son and I should get a bull tag for 17 this fall.Has anyone ever went west from Ogoki bridge to the reservoir. Is water fast,deep,rocky etc. and very hard to get there or not too bad. I realize there are a couple of ports to do but can u travel it with a boat. Also wondering the same things about the Kapikatongwa River. I understand its somewhat easier to travel on. I have hunted numerous other rivers before and realize they can change water levels quickly and vary from year to year. Just wondering if any one has done either of these trips and their overall impression of ease or difficulty. Also wondering about the number of hunters in each area. I do not want to encroach on areas that people have hunted or camped on for years. Is there enough room to fan out and avoid other hunters on these rivers. Thanking any one in advance that can shed some light on this trip for my son and I. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR ANY ONES SECRET OR BEST SPOT. WE ARE GOING AND WILL DO OUR BEST TO AVOID PEOPLE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. THANKS AGAIN

I hunted there years ago. I think you'll find the Kapikatongwa River easy to run but busy, especially the first 2 weeks. Not sure about the Ogoki west. Best bet would be to go for a fly in up there. Not as much competition.

I/we own a water access camp off the Kapikatongwa River. Lots of native pressure because they are allowed to drive the roads that we aren't. Lots of roads that aren't marked. We may rent the camp. East of Ogoki Rd

Thanks redd foxx.Had heard that it did have some hunting pressure but not near as much as the Ogoki or Ottertail.Had also thought of fly in but my son is looking forward to a river hunt.It will be his first experience on a river hunt.

i hunted 17 and 18A since 1988, great spot to hunt, don’t go until 3rd week of October or later. Let everyone drive out the moose the first week, then it quiets down and you are lucky to see anyone. Then the moose come back out.
i last went in 2018, My old party was organized. It was with my Dad and uncles. They retired so I tried getting together with new guys and it’s useless. No commitment, cancel at the last minute. It’s so frustrating.
i hope you guys have a great time, I had a good 40 years of Moose hunting with my Dad and it was great. I find a party of four or six is the way to go, especially if your moose runs into a swampy area.
