Your thoughts on a TVM .54 smoothbore?

Thinking about buying this gun. I think I can get it for $700 shipped to Ogdensburg. I'm very keen on hearing your thoughts/opinions on this gun, esp. the price and quality of TVM.

Having hunted a few deer in the past I think this should though a big enough piece of lead to drop a deer within 50 yards. Plus be a lot of fun shooting other game.

I would not imagine great range with a smoothbore, but I have not shot full bore round balls through my shotgun.

That's true. But look at it this way - you can custom load one gun on the fly to shoot anything from squirrels to deer.

I'm thinking 50 yd would be a long shot with it. I shot a deer last year with my .54 GPR flintlock. It was at 52 yds and dropped on the spot. Mind you the GPR is rifled and has peep sights on it.

I talked to a fellow on another site as he had ordered a rifle from TVM. He seemed pleased with the fit and finish of his rifle, a Late Lancaster I believe.

I have been thinking of order a rifle from them as well and from what I heard from that fellow, I think you (or I) would be safe in getting one of their pieces.

I follow TVM on Facebook and they seem to make very fine firearms.

.54 cal is roughly 28 ga so you should be able to get some close range shotgunning in as well as deer hunting with a ball.

I had a .54 TVM long rifle. Their guns are of exceptional quality. I would say that your accuracy limit for deer may be about 75 yards. Well, most traditional muzzleloaders are limited to about 125 yards anyway. That's why hunting with a muzzleloader used to be a challenge meriting a special season. Buy it. And use it for small game with shot too.
I still keep my eyes open for one of those uncommon T/C Renegade .56 smoothbores.

The seller is asking $700 to ship to Ogdensburg. I don't think it will be an issue to get it cross the border. the big problem now is getting my wife to buy into the idea that I "need" this gun...

My wife used to say that my TVM Tennessee Rifle was the prettiest gun she'd ever seen........even people uninterested in shooting think longrifles are cool.....
