I am looking to put in a food plot but need to start from scratch. Anyone know where I could get (rent or buy) one of these? Anyone got opinions on brands, or want to sell me theirs?

If you call around to local feed/seed stores that sell Bishops 'Rackstacker' forage mixes, some of them rent out a 'Plot Mule' if you buy the forage seeds from them. These work great, worth every penny for a weekend worth of work.
Or call Bishops seeds and ask if they have a distributor in your area, they may rent out the mules themselves.

Princess Auto also has a tow behind cultivating disc.

I use a cultivator behind the tractor on the 3pt hitch. I know you can rent a similar set up (tractor and cultivator) from various equipment rental places. Not sure where you are preparing the plot but Orangeville Equipment rentals in Amaranth definitely rents them out.
i picked up a ground hog max afew years back fro als corner store, great for doing small plots
Whatever you get make sure you put A LOT of weight on it to really get the discs down. I had a plot mule which worked amazing but I added I think was about 75lbs of weights on it. You really have to keep at a constant speed or else it won't dig down in the dirt....BUT weight is the key!
I now have a Ground Hog Max and didn't work for me. High quality well made product but no 2" receiver on my ATV, so tried on UTV Yamaha Viking and unworkable. The vertical height on the mounting arm needs the higher clearance of the ATV. Need a jack to mount on UTV. Then at lowest setting the rear wheels were still off the ground and only moving with the front wheels working. When discs bit they went straight down 6" it became an anchor and stuck the UTV on flat ground. But look at pics. got another type of old Harrow slightly rebuilt dragged behind UTV//ATV did the trick. Food plot now a couple weeks old and awesome. Attachment 29788Attachment 29789Attachment 29790
