hey there,
i've got a few forests that i hunt in the waterloo region and mennonite country. i'm new to uplands but figured i'd keep my ear to the ground. any idea of what to look for and what might be in my woods? i already saw a ton of turkey, deer and small game and i think i busted a grouse my first year hunting, but would be good to know a few grouse or pheasants could pop up every now and again.
any info would be appreciated. feel free to pm if you'd rather.

Can there be grouse....yes....can there be pheasants...not likely.....
Habitant (what to look for).... The dirtier/thicker the bush the more likely it will hold game/overgrown fence rows, thick bush/swampy stuff/taller grasses/weeds etc will hold a lot of game....
big open hardwood forest will hold the least amount of game....

I grew in that area as a boy, outside of Bridgeport used to be decent grouse hunting along the Grand but now there are only million dollar homes there. Puslinch has a few mnr woodlots, decent woodcock in October, maybe Conestoga lake area they release pheasants and again some woodcock early in the year.

ive got a few places where i do have, maybe i need to keep a closer eye for birds this fall.
Do you mean the puslinch township or lake?
Would help to get a pointer dog and train him - will make your hunts more enjoyable....
If the cover you are hunting leaves you beat up and bleeding after pushing through then it may be decent woodcock cover and likely hold grouse too but don't expect many shots at grouse this far South. Most flush at the sound of your car door when you get there.
boy that's the first thing I noticed when I moved to Southern Ontario! If you don't believe in natural selection try hunting grouse in Southern Ontario using the same technique as Northern Ontario.Quote:
