doubles

The last few times I have been training with the pup I ve noticed double woodcock flushes. Meaning dog is on point and we will put up 2 birds from the same spot. This almost never happens during the hunting season. At least not for me. Just wondering if others are hitting "doubles" right now...

I get doubles often during the season. I haven't seen many this summer but I also haven't been out to where I hunt them yet this year.

I hit an area last year that was producing 3 or 4 birds. Probably local birds but is was like coveys of woodcock. Dog would go on point and every step I took to flush a bird would pop up. It's was a great 2 days of hunting and great for a 10 month old pup at the time.

probably pushing up family groups. During the migration have often put up multiple birds. Got to trust the dog if she says its there then its there.

I don't know that I've hit a double during the season, but in early spring preseason last year, we were putting up multiple birds. We put up 9 from one spot once....it was like fireworks going off.

Kudos to you guys who can nail enough birds to make more than a sandwich, I tried hunting Woodcock religiously years ago and end of day never had more than a couple, pathetic actually. I do see all you guys have pictures of your dogs up, obviously the key to being successful.

Without the dog won't even think of hunting woodcock. They are vital not only to finding them but to locate them after the shot. Couldn't count the times moving to where I saw the bird fall have the dog point the dead bird and still couldn't see the bird.

I have a "secret" :) spot I visit in the Spring/Fall where there are always several woodcock - wet, shady, heavy cover. Great place to train/refresh a dog's skills.
