My guy is awful in the heat he just has no tolerance for it. Last week at training after he would retrieve his birds he flopped on the ground at my feet and I had to pour water all over him. Luckily he only had 3 birds shot over him. It was fairly cool too compared to what we've had. He and I are both looking forward to cooler temps
We take our Lab out for a swim in the pond every couple of hours. She gets to cool off and chase frogs!
Do you shave Jake down, Cass? Sadie melts in the heat and I took to shaving her right down with a #10 blade. It helped a lot although now she looks goofy.
No I don't. Just trim his feathers and ears. Don't want to risk messing his coat up
Rylee's a stubble butt - # 7 blade before each hunting season....
I have the only orange short haired pointer around...lol
Excellent information -

From that piece: "A dog panting heavily taking in large amounts of water is a risk of bloat. Due to the heavy panting they will swallow air, mixed with a large amount of water they can bloat."
That's an important point and the first time I've seen it written down. I saw that happen to a dog this summer: the belly starts to inflate as the dog lies on the ground panting. Either the dog will burp it back up, or if you're unlucky the gut twists and you have another potentially fatal emergency.
I bought my pup one of those gel cooling matts two days ago because she's such a hot pup. Well at least it lasted two days. Wtf? Wasn't cheap either.
Oh yeah, I took her to long point yesterday to swim at the beach. Long point has a dog section now. It was great.
I haven't done any training this weekend except taken Elly for a couple of swims. Not worth risking.
