I've just noticed a small bald patch on the top of my beagle's paw. It looks inflamed. There's been no change in diet, so I don't suspect a food allergy. Anyone else encounter this? Any point or harm in trying something topical like polysporin before going to the vet?

If he has been licking it constantly , it could be a granulomas (lick sore). Check with your vet as it is hard to clear up .
I think that it commonly referred to as a hot spot. The more they lick it gets worse. My German Shepherd gets them all the time. Usually get script for pain killers and antibiotics to get it cleared up.
I go with interdigital cysts- they aren't always BETWEEN the toes, can be dorsal or ventral.( Hot spots aren't common on the foot.)
I don't go to the vet right away for those ; I've seen many of them over the years.... but I AM NOT SAYING YOU SHOULDN'T GO.
I soak them 2 -3times a day in Epsom salts + warm water and then polysporin or cortisone. The dog wear the lampshade 24/7 until it is gone to not allow licking. I give Benedryl for itching relief.
It sometimes gets worse before it gets better. If it's not better in a week , I see the vet for a culture. ( Pain killers aren't given.)
If I see any swelling along the leg we see the vet asap.

I agree with Sharon. Looks like an Inter-digital cyst.
When my dog had one I soaked it 2x daily in epsom salts but in the end he had to go on antibiotics. cleared up and never came back.
I have given my dog some benadryl for something like this before, I found the dosages here http://www.anydogrescue.org/benadryl-for-dogs/ which is great for some things, but the vet will be the best for determining what's wrong. Remember that Benadryl is a temporary fix.
