Dinged prop - repair?

Well, after many years of avoiding rocks I finally, very lightly, dinged my prop on my Yamaha 9.9 outboard. The actual damage is very minor, just over a 1/2" in length and only 2 of the 3 blades were damaged. (don't be fooled by the pics, they make it look worse! :ashamed: )

Does this need to be repaired? Or can I just file off the burrs? And after very careful inspection, thankfully, I did not manage to hit the lower unit anywhere.

Any suggestions on where to go for a repair in the west GTA? Any idea what it might cost?

That's nothing - just fix it up yourself.

There are outfits that refurbish props and will make a chewed up one look like new. Most boat dealers will take your prop and send it to them for you and call you when its ready to pick up - but that's for damaged props - yours looks like its barely through the paint.

Nothing there to worry about. I have seen way worse operate without any consideration.

ya wouldnt worry much about it, file it a bit... when you change your bottom end oil just make sure theres no metal filings in it, which would indicate internal damage, but based on the pics i wouldnt be concerned...

Ya that's fine. Plenty of rocks to still hit before being concerned.

Yeah, I was just draining the oil and checked it carefully - all OK.

I'll lightly and carefully file the burrs, paint it up and throw it back on. I hope I can go another decade without hitting anything! Thanks guys.

I had our Yamaha 115 factory prop redone after a minor ding like that for 110.00 buck in Ottawa. Cheaper than the 220.00 for new one.

Most shops send them to kawartha prop for repair. A little ding in my 20hp Yamaha prop cost me three miles per hour. You would never know if I didn't have a graph to show you

A prop is a balanced and tuned part of the outboard, and as much as the ding doesn't appear crucial, may result in problems later. Now if your willey got a pimple on the side of it would you say, naw nothing to worry about, or get it fixed.

There's a place in buckhorn, pretty sure it's called kawartha prop repair. Used them quite a few times lol. Top notch service, great people!
