I put it on him when we train/run off leash, or hunt.
Everytime he will be off leash, hunting, training or just out for a run. Very rarely need to use it though. Mostly use it for the beeper function.
If you are new to e collars I would exercise caution as many people over correct with inexperience and that is not a good thing. I would hook up with a pro and get some guidance for the first little while.
Thanks all. I've started putting it on when ever he goes for a leak (off leash), as at ten months, he is starting to make his own decisions and ignoring general commands.
It's on the second lowest setting, and may only need a nick once a day or so. Once it's on, he generally listens much better anyway, he's not stupid!

D. I hope you didn't just simply put it on and started nicking him.. There's a process of introducing e-c to a dog, which allows the dog to understand how this thing works. Your dog may be able to figure it out anyways, but it can cause stress and frustration in the dog. There are good vids on youtube from Tritronics.
No, he is fully ecollar conditioned. I think this is a general - hey...I'm over here chewing on a branch....and you can't catch me because I can run faster. Two tweets on the whistle works 99% of the time. Also, inconsistency with the family members doesn't help.
With the collar on, his obedience is more than perfect, considering his age, energy level and search drive.

As stated....any time she's off leash - even in the backyard.
