I'm using the 597ci hd. The 688ci is the current modle of the 597 but with a few more bells. I strongly recommend this unit. I find it's more versatile then your standerd flasher. And with gps built in its perfect to mark honey holes. Depending on where you live I would strongly recommend a navionics chip, Shows all your depth charts. One thing i found to be a little bit of a let down was the ice transducer is a 200/83k meaning 20 degree and 60 degree cone angle where as the humminbird ice 55 or the marcum units come with 9 degree and 20 degree cone angle. Other then that still a wicked unit
Hey thanks for the info i was looking at the ice 55 and the marcum lx5 first and came accross some good info on the 688 and the elite 5 that have sonar as well as gps seem the way to from 500 to 600 why not ?
I saw a guy using this the other day at Binbrook and it looked pretty slick, the GPS would really come in handy on larger bodies of water.
I use the 688 and would recommend it. GPS is a nice to have for sure. It sucks the battery pretty good but I found by dimming down the backlight the battery will last longer than an ice session you will have. The narrow beam is excellent so this unit shines in deeper water, 20-200 fow but the wide beam is not as good so it's not as effective as a single beam traditional flasher in 10fow or less.
So to summarize if you plan to use it in your boat and on the ice like I do, you won't find a better value. If it's strictly for ice use then it's a toss up between the 688 and let's say the ice45 or equiv priced vex or marcum flasher.
