I'm looking at replacing my '99 Johnson 25hp triple that has been mostly problems with either a 25hp 4-stroke Honda or Yamaha.

Looking at the websites, Yamaha wants a shade over $4000. Honda seems to think $5300 is more reasonable.

I think both are comparable engines, why would Honda think theirs is worth a 35% premium? I have to speak to both dealers and find out what's included in their prices, prop, fuel tank, etc. Maybe that will explain the price difference a little better.

Does any one have a fact based opinion on one brand over the other? Any known maintenance issues?

Ok, I've had both. Had a 1996 Honda 25 LS tiller, it had a pile of hours on it. It had a couple gaskets go on it and I had it overhauled. The mechanic said the engine interior looked as good as new, virtually no wear(synthetic oil), and as I was looking to upgrade gave the motor to my son for his big 14 foot Lund. He's happy like a pig in a truffle field. No other running problems with that motor. I have a 40 Yamaha LS tiller on the same boat, just a quiet as the old 25 Honda. Honda wouldn't budge when I tried to trade it at the dealer, wasn't even interested. I saved about $2K buying the Yamaha over the Honda. It was pretty much a no brainer for that deal. Matter of fact one thing that PMO, was Honda wanted over $500 just to get a tiller for the 40. Good luck in your choice BTW, most engines over a certain size now ( 10HP?) don't come with props, they're abut an extra $100-140.

You're paying for a name. Go with the Yamaha and you won't be sorry.

I have owned several of both brands. Yamaha would be my choice even if they were same cost.

Price out a Suzuki as well. I have 2 of them, and I can't say anything bad.

Ok. I took every ones advice to heart. I got quotes on all three brands, Honda is out the window. They want a $1400 premium over the Yamaha, and even one dealer, who sells both, cannot explain it. I'm going with the Yamaha, the deal I have cooked up is for a F25, short shaft, tiller, electric start, with prop, fuel tank and additional 2 years on warranty, bringing it to five years for $4149 +tax. Going to pick up a second prop as well.

I've owned both and the biggest difference is the gas mileage - advantage Honda.

The Yamaha will still get way better fuel economy than my existing 2stroke.

Interested in selling your old 3 cylinder? I always loved those motors.
