Skunked today but we'll get them tomorrow
The day started out pretty well. Another forum member and I went out to my spot today. We got there nice and early and settled down against a tree with the ground blind and decoys in the field. As soon as legal shooting time started, so did a bunch of Toms in the woods behind us. I didn't bring the gun today and I was intending to video the hunt.
After a few calls and responses from number of Toms, we started to hear them flying off their roosts. Then a Hen started calling as well. A few calls back and forth but I guess they liked the real thing more than me. We toughed it out for another 1 1/2 hours and then moved to the next field where I had a blind set up. A few gobbles in the distance and nothing close. We did see a couple of Hens. Around 11:00 am we decide to move the blind to where we started the day, but into the woods about 10 yards. We just get there and then we hear some gobbles. I quickly set up the small ground blinds, one for the shooter and one for me. We also put out foam Tom and Hen decoys. At this point I have a black T shirt and my hat. No face mask or gloves. The toms start responding to my calls and it looks like they are going to come in on our left. Lots of gobbles and we know there are 2 Toms gobbling. After 15 minutes we see their heads….coming to us from the right! These guys were throwing their voices. My buddy can't move his gun as they are looking right at him and me. They walk by us at less than 25 yards. They continue and walk in a half circle behind us, then out into the field. They were gobbling and strutting and both of their heads were bright red. I was surprised that they didn't see me but I wasn't moving anything they could see.
The are then out of sight so we set up the pop up blind in the woodlot about 10 yards from the edge, close to a wide path that goes through the woods. Tomorrow morning we'll be able to watch them fly down off their roosts. Hopefully I get some decent video of my friend killing his first wild turkey.
