A dog killed a squirel, what's could be the consequences?

Just curious:
My GF took our German shepherd around the neighborhood two nights ago unleashed, our bylaw allowed unleashed dog as long as they are in control and in a 60' radius.
As she went around a tennis course a lady, that she happened to know a bit, ran towards her yelling. But, she stopped when she recognized her and told her the following story. The night before a truck stopped by the tennis course, let a shepherd out and it ran after a squirrel and killed it. The lady yielded at him, the guy tell her to foff and left. She then called the cops about it.
We don't live in the city so this is not the kind of behavior that we see at all, usually people don't mind to see dead squirrel at all....

Anyway, what are the consequences if they find the owner of that dog?

A guy in Brockville or Belleville (one of the B-villes on the waterway) sucessfully argued his case years ago that his dog was allowed to chase and kill urban rats and squirrels because they are nuisance rodents, not "wildlife".

I'd imagine your neighbourhood GS owner would be able to do the same.

Not much , my neighbors dog across the road is constantly killing them, according to the MNRF , we were shown in black and white that if any wildlife is ruining your property , you have the right to get rid of said wildlife by any legal means.
In my neighbors case the squirrels were in the attic and he is just preventing any damage [they chew wire insulation which can short out and cause a fire ], most of the time the dog gets them , he also shots them on sight.

By the way , we live out in the country with a 147 acre forest 150 yards away, neighbor has an 60 acre farm , we have a 1 acre lot.

But this is in his own property, in my story case in was on public land and the owner doesn't live close by.

I still doubt very much that anything will happen.

What about cats? We had a neighbour with a cat that was continually bring home dead squirrels, birds, rabbits... Sometimes not dead - to be played with.

If the "authorities" want to charge a dog owner for killing a squirrel I think they'd have to look carefully at cat owners.

Never let your dog kill anything in public ; make sure it happens in the back yard. :) :silly:

(I would hope the Police have better things to do than find a dog that killed a squirrel.)

Dog killed tree rat. Wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
