Why isn't there something like Tripadvisor for fishing/hun ting lodges?

Looking for new places to book fishing trips can be a bit of a hassle. I think that there is a definite need for some sort of review listing that could help all of to find great fishing or hunting camps. Maybe it's time we had something like this on this forum?

Things I would be interested in seeing some sort of rating system for:
1) Fishing - species and actual results by month. Not what is promised but actual results.
2) Pricing - cost per person or cabin
3) Boat Rentals - price and types of boats
4) Type of facility i.e. range from very basic cabin or camping to places where you could take your family
5) Sort by areas such as Sudbury, North Bay, Parry Sound, etc..

Any thoughts?

Well it would be opinion based and you know where that can go. Fishing (catching) results are pretty much dependant on the fish, right outstanding some days and then it's the pits. A fair number of the places I've checked had all the pricing, daily, weekly, with/without boats and a host of pics to show the cottages and amenities. Some have the different season rates along with extra guests etc. I'm sure it would be a lot of work setting up a spread sheet for something like that.

Yes, it would be great. Like trip advisor, it would be base on people experience and opinion. It's not there because so few peoples need such a thing that it's not profitable.
You could start it if you have the time and the investment.

Guess I'll chime in.

There are very good reasons why it won't happen here. I feel there's a risk some won't really appreciate or understand them or at the least the "whole picture", and so wont go into the reasons. They exist.

Will say, while it's not what your looking for every issue of OOD has a travel section. With write ups giving readers a sense of the fishing, species, tackle and/or techniques and impressions. Fine details like plans, cost, whether or not there are boat launches/marinas, etc and more. Depending on various variables images of the place, cabins, lodge, ammenties, etc, etc.

I've been on a number of them, both as the primary writer and normally the photographer.

and there is the travel forum. It's lightly used but you have to take things with a grain of salt. The good, the bad and the fishing. A cold front can shut it down....but all you might read is...
Fishing sucked...or the opposite...Fishing was unreal....then you go and the bite is off..."Fishing wasn't as promised".

Good points John. I do know that posting a thread on this forum to ask for recommendations is pretty much a waste of time. The articles I have see in OOD magazine have been pretty thorough. Time to do some digging though past issues!

I believe, could be wrong that archives are available.

I've spent my life literally always trying to go somewhere different each year. I can tell you straight there are less than 5 places I've ever returned to. My father liked always going somewhere new, and I do as well. There are very few places/regions/systems I haven't fished. The past X years as a contributor my ability to visit even more, I've only been blessed further.

I haven't scratched the surface despite a lifetime of always trying to see different places.

One "issue" other than those noted by FW (and there are more) is that while we all share pretty common baselines, there will be all kinds of different responses for the simple reason everyone looks for something different beyond the fishing.

So person A might really like camp K, person B not so much despite the fishing experience identical. And it could be as simple as the boatlaunches (or lack there of) or maybe the structure- lots of shoals/islands so electronics handy- or person B just not liking that kind of fishing but it then reflects poorly on the experience rather than person B not really making the right choice.

As long as there are fish to be caught, a good working boat for rent and clean, simple accommodations, I'm pretty happy. We have gone to Quinte for the last few years and it's time to check out some new areas.

Fishonlinemobile.com is pretty good. Has the lake and species info, as well as stocking info.
