A man in his thirties is dead after he was attacked by a dog in central Hamilton on Wednesday night, despite desperate efforts by nearby residents to pull the dog off.
Burton Street residents said they had heard screams outside and rushed out to see what they could do. One hit the dog with a baseball bat to try to stop the attack.
Bert Stoner said he called 911 just after 11 p.m. ET.
"So I went outside — that's when I see the guy on the ground with the dog on top of him."
Stoner said he saw two or three people trying to get the dog off the man.
"He was hurt bad," he told CBC News.
"The dog was at the guy's throat," said another resident, Gerry Cassidy. He also said a neighbour who was watching the whole thing scrambled to find something to knock the dog off and came out with a bat.
Police said the attack happened at 11:15 p.m. when two men were walking a dog along the central Hamilton street.
"The dog began to attack one of the men and he collapsed," a police news release reads. "A passerby intervened and using a baseball bat, attempted to fend off the dog."
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His official cause of death has not yet been determined, but a post-mortem is scheduled for Thursday.
Animal control has possession of the dog, police say. Residents have described it as a pit bull, but city spokeswoman Ann Lamanes says animal control can confirm it was not.
The dog is a Sharpei Fila mix and weighs about 20 Kilograms.
