Purina Beggin' dog treats lawsuit asks: Where's the bacon?

NEW YORK - Nestle Purina Petcare Co's Beggin' dog treats may fool dogs into thinking they are mostly made of real bacon, but a federal lawsuit claims that humans may be misled too.
The proposed class action by Paul Kacocha of Dutchess County, New York, the owner of a West Highland terrier named Sophie, said he and other dog owners paid a premium for popular Beggin' products, assuming they were made mostly of real bacon, when in fact the meat is only a miniscule portion of the pet treats. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Kacocha said customers were duped by how the treats looked, smelled and resembled actual bacon - and the name "Beggin" even sounds like "bacon" - despite being made primarily of "filler" like wheat, corn, water and soy. The packaging prominently touts a picture of real bacon and proclaims the treats are "made with real bacon!" according to the lawsuit. Bacon is tenth on the list of ingredients, behind wheat, corn, sugar and water, among others, the lawsuit said.
One well-known Beggin' commercial that has aired on national television featured a dog jumping on his owner asking, "Where is it? Where's the bacon?" That ad, the lawsuit said, is "an ironic, though unintended metaphor for this entire case."

I thought so as well. Although these are likely a Chinese product, they do have bacon, so...

I could never understand why people choose not to read the ingredient list. And why would you want to feed your dog bacon !:confused:

I still feed Diamond dog food to two of my dogs and my yellow lab has been eating it for about 8 years. Diamond has had a bad reputation in the past but I have had no issues with it. I have raised many litters of pups on it with great results. I am sure many on this forum feed the Purina product with great results as well especially when Purina sponsors so many. Whatever works best for your dog I always say. If your pet food rep says all is good then no worries.

Probably millions of dogs have survived on table scraps and garbage. Dogs will survive on just about anything.

That is so true. In the 50's - 70s my Dad and I bred and trained beagles. One year Dad's business went bankrupt. 6 kids and dogs had to eat.

Every Friday he would go to the trucks at the construction sites and pick up the food they would be throwing out on Fridays- buns, salad, sandwiches, fruit , donuts. etc.

The dogs and the kids survived just fine for 1/2 a year until Dad got a new job.
No difference in dogs' coats or energy levels .
Kids still looked healthy. :)

Surviving on just about anything is the essence of doghood.

This is how they were domesticated in the first place. One prominent theory suggests that dogs were domesticated because of their valuable function in waste disposal: they will eat human feces.

I am starting a pool on how long before someone says, "That's a better diet than Beneful." Get your bets in quick....

Just got back from Port Huron Michigan and went over to Menards (similiar to Home Depot). Diamond Naturals dog food was on sale for $27.99 40lb bag. I would typically pay $58.99 Canadian for the same bag in Sarnia. Went over and bought 4 bags and pretty much stocked up for the next 6 months. They carry a pile of Purina products that would be at the much lower price point. Purina sure offers something for every dog owner and price point imaginable. Don't worry Welsh i won't say the dreaded word because it was there in large volumes. :)
