Dog Safety

Is it a reflection of our society or is it just me? We already commented on the Hamilton man that was assaulted/died by the alleged attach of a dog. Last weekend I saw pictures of my nephew who was attacked by a GS and pieces of his arm were found on his shoes. This dog too is in quarantine. (Don't have the details but that's not my point.)
Then, I experience not one but 2 dogs in the same day riding around in the back of a pick-up truck "loose".
So my question is: Is the quarantining of the dogs driven by a movement that has placed dogs at the same level or perhaps higher than that of humans? If so, why is it OK on-the-other-hand, to have dogs riding loose in pick-ups or loose within a vehicle or on the lap of the driver? Accidents, by definition, are not something we plan so..............I'm confused!?!?!?!

I'm not really sure what your driving at Ugo...that we quarantine a dog that has attacked someone until a decision is rendered as to what will happen to it....or that we allow owners to put their dog in danger.

Are they related issues ?

I will never understand the thought process of people who drive around with their dogs in the back of an open truck. I was on the QEW last year and a pick up passed me with a golden free riding in the back to top it off this was a Goose patrol company truck. I sped up took the phone number that was on the door and called the company to see if this was common practice.
after 10 minutes of conversation (a lot of this was not so polite)I think the owner got my point. offered to come and show him proper dog containment in moving vehicle.

Anyway, I was walking the dog the other day and passed a guy down the street who was trying to get his German shepherd into his pickup truck. Two kids in the bed going for a ride and he wanted the dog to join them. The dog wasn't having any, no way, no how. Scared of the truck and didn't want to get in the back. So he tried lifting it in. The dog starts yelping and whining as he's lifting it in and he's saying, "I'm not hurting you, don't be a baby," etc. Clearly hadn't considered what happens when he puts the truck in gear and it starts moving: the dog's likely going to jump out into traffic. Luckily, he gave up.

A quick search on the 'net revealed some issues back in 2006, I was given about 100lbs of beneful so am I to understand it should not be used? Maybe someone needs some bear bait?

Honestly, I noticed that I started talking to my dog in certain public places when people are around. Stuff the dog will not understand - and I have a full appreciation of the fact that my dog will not understand a single thing I say (other than the tone of my voice).
I live in suburbia and a lot of people there lost any connection to the real world. I guess if you are too long among them, you start to fit in better and better as time goes by.
Well, a dog might have the intellectual capabilities of a six month old when it comes to understanding sentences, rationals and verbally implied threats, but it's not a baby when it comes to a lot of other things...
So yes, people have no idea about how to deal with their dogs - to the point where they look at you strange if you don't do the baby talk.
However, I don't think that this is anything new. The only change one could see is that dogs don't get routinely beaten up and yelled at for no good reason, but now "mommy" gives them a serious talk when one little rat doesn't want to play with the other.
