Leaving the Arctic, Headed South to Ontario

Well my family and I have spent the last 1.5yrs in Iqaluit Nunavut in the arctic. Has been an interesting journey to say the least. We are however looking at leaving and with expecting our third child in January we are looking at heading to Ontario. Not sure for how long. My wife is from BC and I spent the last 7yrs in BC before going to the arctic. I am originally from just outside New Liskeard, Ontatrio. Currently going through the hiring phase for a great career so we will stay in Ontario till I hear whether or not I get hired. If not, then I am not sure how long we'll stay in Ontario as we both love BC. However real estate is much reasonable in Ontario (depending where you look.) Looking forward to exploring my old stomping grounds.

Since living in the arctic have not been able to hunt big game so needless to say I am practically going through with drawls! Luckily I have my bows up here and shoot often. We went down to Ottawa for just over a week and just got back a few days ago. Wife and kids enjoyed being in the country and enjoyed the lakes. Although the heat was a little excessive saying were used to the arctic and yesterday was 1'C, windy and pouring rain.

Anyways excited for the change, excited for our new arrival and excited to start hunting and fishing more. Going to start looking around for work and hopefully send off a few resumes in the coming days.

Congratulations on the upcoming new addition to your family. IIRC,in one of your previous posts you mentioned that you were finding it somewhat difficult to acclimatize to the Inuit lifestyle. If you knew then what you know,now,would you recommend it to someone else contemplating a similar move?

It depends on their situation, job and family. Lots of great jobs up here that you can make 6 digits if you can secure the job. Rent your looking atleast $2500 for a 2 bdr and over $3000 for a 3bdr, plus utilities. Groceries are about triple the price and be prepared to have poor selections and empty shelves at time.

You get used to the dark and the cold. Coldest day was -67'C last winter. For us the biggest thing is our kids. They don't get to enjoy all the things they love and I want them to be able to. Plus probably one of the biggest reason is education. The education up here is very poor and I don't want my kids falling behind too much.

Also if your children need daycare most daycares up here have a 4-5yr wait list.

Hope the move back is a good one, and there is not too much culture shock..

Could you bring a few hundred thousand geese and ducks when you come down please...:thumbup:

Haha they'll be coming down soon enough. Had a community that is south west of here that had to detour planes to another community as the snow geese refused to get off the runway.

Welcome and best of luck ! If you have a trade Sarnia is a good spot to live if you can land a job in chemical valley.

I'd imagine health care is a little better down here as well.

Welcome back! If you decide to stay, be prepared to pay the license fee's as a non-resident, this year anyway? Not sure what the time limit is to establish residency?

Won't be moving probably till Nov-Dec so not to worried about hunting this fall. That is unless I get a job quickly. Still a big move down though so will be a few weeks no matter what. I believe its 6months before your a "resident."
