1st muzzleloader buck... :)
It was a beautiful morning. The sun really burned off that fog creating a very nice view/feeling…. Anyway after sitting for a couple of hours this morning I needed to move. I decided I would still hunt my way back toward my vehicle. I was watching an overgrown orchard, a great view but no activity. I didn’t go 40 yds into the bush before I seen this deer step out behind some cedars. He was only 20 yds away and I just panic and pull the hammer (safety) on my muzzleloader hard and of course with it being so calm in the woods all you hear is “Click”…. The deer stops, stares right at me and with my gun facing left I stand completely still. With the wind in my favour and lots of brush between us he is not sure what to make of me. He does his head wobble back and forth, puts his head down and up really quick trying to catch me moving but I don’t move. I stay statue like. After a minute in this awkward position I start to lose my balance and start shaking ever so slightly. I guess it’s enough for him to run off a bit. I grab my grunt call and give a few grunts, this causes him to stop. Not sure where he is I grunt again and wait hoping his curiosity gets the better of him. I wait a minute or two and grunt again a few times. This time I see him moving from my left to right. I look for an opening but don’t see him anymore. The bush is pretty thick in this area so I can’t see barely 30 yds….. I wait another 1 minute and grunt a few more times and catch his tail movement. There he is and only 30 yds or so away….. After a minute or so don’t see him anymore….I think he left so decide that I will follow up on the deer (go the direction he went)…. I take a few steps, going very slowly and notice what is either a back or a log. I take a couple of more very slow cautious steps trying to keep a tree trunk between me and the deer or log, still not sure at this point. Maybe I took a total of 10 steps going 5 yards, poke my head around the tree and spot the deer looking right at me. This time my gun is already up and pointing toward him. I lay the crosshairs on his chest, and when he turns his head he exposed a good chest shot and I let the bullet fly……bang….the smoke clears a second later and I see this deer (looks like he is hit good) run down a small hill and try to climb up the other side. I lose site of him quick but hear a lot of crashing and assume/hope he is done…. I wait a minute, reload my muzzle loader and begin walking toward the last spot I saw him. It wasn’t a far walk, maybe 30 yds and he was down for the count……..
