Very slow (and hot) in north WMU75
I wish Momma Nature would smarten up. This 20 degree weather is a real pain in the butt. I got lucky and took a yearling buck with my ML on opening morning. I usually like to hang the deer for 5-7 days if I can, but two days of 14 - 19 degree weather sealed the deal. Didn't want to take any chances with the meat. Skinned and cut him into 6 pieces yesterday, and now have him chilled in two marine coolers, with ice. It's so warm, the blowflies are out. Anyone attempting to hang had better watch out for these guys. We've heard almost zero shooting around us this year. The deer are still here (game cameras show this). Damn hot weather has really changed their behaviour. It's been perfect zero-wind nights, making them pretty much nocturnal right now. If I had a three inch tallow fat layer (wait a minute, I think I do), and a heavy winter coat, I think I'd be laying in some cool cedar swamp during daylight hours. We only hunt field edges. I'm hoping for some colder weather, mixed with a few windy, crappy nights. No real sign of any rutting yet in the area we hunt north of Fenelon Falls. No shortage of coyotes. Seeing lots on the game cams. Sometimes 2-3 at a time, usually eating all my apples.
