I am in 90 b . Deer numbers are down across the area but there are pockets with lots of deer . Area 90 b has many areas that are never hunted and we have a ton of city deer . You really have to look for the deer on years line we have had the last few with hard winters tons of coyotes and a lot if deer car crashes. You may have to look in new areas if yours is not producing this year .we have been watching a group of 7 does and fawns on dads farm wait for a good buck to show .the almish boys took a big 11 point and a 9 point in the first gun hunt so I am hoping that their will be something left for my daughter as this is her first gun hint for deer .. scouting is the number one tool in deer hunting. You can't shoot them if thy are not there .Dutch
I did some scouting on 3 different properties today, probably about a half dozen does and fawns and 1 or 2 small bucks. I've seen one small buck so far this year twice but haven't been able to get him. Worse comes to worst, he'll be bigger next year.
I might pass on a doe this year if presented with the chance, I'd like the numbers to get a little higher for next year. I don't believe the OMNR is doing jack to properly manage the deer population throughout Ontario so I'll have to take things into my own hands.
The Mnr is only worried about keeping the deer numbers as low as possible because of the car insurance company's. Thy have been throwing out fie tags like crazy for the last ten years .There were some years we could shoot as many as 7 deer per hunter. Thy kept this up till people started to complain. One thing the Mnr may have to look into is city archery hunts .There are 2 to 4 deer hit ever day in London alone. Kw has a huge problem with urban deer as well as many other cities. All the deer hit by cars are put in one pile but I would say that 80 percent are in town limits. A urban archery hunt would help .also farmer's that collect cash from crop damage should have to allow hunting on their farms before being given any cash from insurance. Just something to think about. .Dutch
i like your thinking dutch. i live in a small town that were not allowed to hunt or shoot in at all and were being over run with coyotes, its so bad i got an email from the town this summer telling me how to keep coyotes away from my house. me and my brother have been out hunting for two weeks, morning and night in a couple different locations now and ive seen more deer while i was at the gym staring into the bush that im not allowed to shoot than i have hunting. there are deer around where were hunting we just haven't seen them many of them in person. i had a nice looking buck walk behind my stand about a 100 yards out last night, and another buck walk out to us while goose hunting about 2 weeks ago but nothing in shooting range. either way in my town (lasalle) we need an urban deer hunt and even more so an urban coyote hunt. theres lots of places bushes and fields that would be perfect to hunt here too.
Three of us hunted hard the first week of the controlled hunt and saw a total of twelve deer spread over the four properties we hunted. There was plenty of sign around, although not much to indicate rut activity. With the weather, it looked like everything was happening overnight in our area with most of the shots we heard throughout the week either at first or last light. Late last week I saw a small four-point tearing through an empty field along 59 Highway on my way to work, and he was definitely on a mission.
I was out squirrel hunting this morning and saw lots of fresh scrapes and feeding activity. This was in 90b. During the gun hunt I was out 2 mornings and killed an average 7pt on the second morning. It was the only deer I saw. TC
Possibly agree with the "pockets of deer theory", if it weren't for the fact I've hunted 90B for 14 years and have never seen so many does on my way out in the AM, 11 in total over 4 mornings. Also had several sightings of 2-6 does and younger bucks at a time visible during the opening morning. Unfortunately the bigger concern for all members is the apparent shortage of tags issued for the controlled hunts, groups and individuals not receiving tags after years of additional tags available and from all reports and info many harvested and many more seen.
I heard it was around 90 percent draw this year after many years of lots of extra tags .so yes numbers are wsy down .but take a drive to a city cemetery in January. Or go look in a park or wood lot in kw or London and you will find a ton of deer. .
