Massive gun-bust case tossed

I'm not sure what is more troubling, the shoddy and reckless police work, or the fact that a thug was let off the hook even though he was packing a sawed off shotgun.

Charles Gerald Patrick, 57, remains in custody and faces multiple charges after the seizure. Police say the warrant was issued after Patrick was stopped by a general duty officer on Dec. 11 about a separate investigation for fraudulent vehicle registration and was caught with a loaded and sawed-off 410 shotgun concealed under his jacket. Upon search of the vehicle, police seized ammo, marijuana, a large machete and some steroids.

Personally, I believe it is more troubling that the guy gets off. Obviously a low life.

Maybe, a crook got off,but,they know who he is and can watch him like a hawk until he screws up,again. I'm terribly concerned with the work of RCMP Constables and officers that should have known better,to say nothing of the JP that signed the warrants. WTH was he/she thinking? Did the JP have any idea what he/she was doing or was it someone with ZERO legal training who just happened to have enough juice to be appointed through purely political patronage like we see here in Ontario all the time?

Policing these days is so specialized because of this type of thing. General duties officers are not properly trained in proper warrant prep. or criminal investigations. Especially in smaller detachments. Most now have specialized warrant writers, and investigators to handle investigations like this. I would suggest the fault should lie with their supervisors .....

Quite clearly,no one asked any questions. I found the Judge's observations interesting.

They say that the RCMP is supposed to be Canada's " BEST TRAINED " - Police Force , ????????? :rolleyes:

Police 101.....fill out arrest affidavit and search warrant, do the risk management checklist and then determine entry request type(knock, no knock), the manpower(SWAT or Patrol) the time requested to serve(6AM-6PM or 6PM to 6AM), confirm correct address and swear it before the judge.

I know that the Cdn. "Judge" says cops should decide/know better than them whether to knock or just bang the door.
I also know that there is an ITO and a draft but come on, it's still the same simple process. Surely if an American cop knows your process, fack, can't the best of the best keep their chit straight?

Yea, I don't think I've heard of an investigation screwed up so bad ! As far as the hard entry, of the hundreds of warrants we executed, the only knock was a boot to the door !
