Anyone use strictly howling?

Hey guys was wondering if anyone out there does sets for coyotes and does just strictly howling instead of distress sounds this time of year? I've used howls before and had success but always used a distress sound as well. I was wondering if anyone has, how long do the coyotes usually take to come in? Do they usually come in pretty quick or do they just slowly creep in? I'm going to try doing sets this way because I notice right about this time of year when breeding season ramps up my success rate with distress sounds goes down.

Its a crap shoot

Pretty hard to leave a spot without trying everything in the book if you are not seeing anything. Why stick to just one sound.same as fishing keep trying different bait till you get a bite . Dutch

Look up Fratri's post, he lays out whole senario's each time. Like above, I have had them come at 2 mins, and others after 30mins when packing up to move to next spot. I do rabbit distress and this time of year Female challenge calls on FoxPro.

When I go out for an evening set up. I start off with a locator howl, as this is when the family groups get together to hunt. If I get an answer , ii sometimes use a challenge bark and howl , this usually brings out the dominant male trying to find the new intruder in his area, works most of the time especially this time of the year as they are starting to mate up. If more than one responds , I will then use a distress call as this gets them all excited [hey some free food , I'll get it first ].
I also use a combination of electronic and mouth blown calls.

All of this as well. right now this time of year with mating.

I have used just howls multiple times. Me and my buddy will set up 500 yards apart and howl back and forth to each other the last or first 30min of the day...



I have had 3, 4 and doubles come in a few times. I had 3 coyotes surround me when I was howling back to my fox pro one night. I shot the front one at 20 yards when the one behind me was about 20 yards away. Probably the most exciting hunt I've ever had. All 3 coyotes where charging towards me from different angles. Intense!

I remember your story.... very cool...

I usually give a couple of howls when I start the set, wait a couple of minutes and then go into some sort of dying rabbit/critter sound. As the set nears the end I will include a few more howls, then challenge barks followed by pup distress..... but like Coyhunter said, it's a crap shoot, but worth trying....

Thanks for the replies guys. It's not like I don't have any experience with calling, but there's always room to learn more.
