hunting on the quebec side

[COLOR=#333333]New to the Ottawa area and Ontario.... benefits of hunting on the quebec side seem to out weigh the convenience of hunting on the ontario side....When i ask about hunting on Quebec side people say....More crown land,bigger more abundant animals,cheaper land for hunt camps....Only disadvantage i see is licence fees.....So why don't more people fish and hunt in Quebec?:confused:

Lot's of crown land just 1 hour from Kanata.

Well, lotsa reasons i supposed, added cost being the major. But also most people don't live near a provincial border like you. Hunting land within most people's provinces are closer, so why bother? that's usually the answer.
Also the addition of knowing a new provinces laws and seasons is a hurdle. it's hard enough to know the laws of one province.

But, i'm with you, i hunt in Quebec, the maritimes and Ontario, i grew up in quebec though, and am a landowner there, so it's simpler for me (also much of my family is in the maritimes so i have opportunities there.) i might be moving to Ottawa this summer, so we will really be in the same boat then!

Also the language barrier can turn some people off. It can create issues getting involved with hunting private lands and things like that as well....
Also, us Quebecors are awful drivers, be aware haha make sure you have winter tires too...

We would like to buy some land for a hunt camp....Im wondering if the cost of land being cheaper in Quebec would off set the licence fees being higher....When i look at topo maps of ontario and Quebec....The Quebec side is just littered with crown land and lakes....

I would go there for moose but I would stick with my side of the river for everything else. Land is not any cheaper, you just have to look for land in Ontario.

Houses are definitely much cheaper in Quebec as is land, I don't think there is any disputing that. My father used to hunt there and he used to bring me before I was old enough to hunt. I also hunted deer there the first few seasons after getting my license. We hunted private land. To be honest, the terrain was so much more interesting than the flat, boring terrain that I hunt in eastern Ontario.
As others mentioned, I think the cost for non-residents turns many off. I don't know what the situation is now, but when I hunted there, non-residents could not obtain an antlerless tag.
If I was invited to hunt in Quebec by someone I knew, I would probably try it again, especially if they hunted private land. I really enjoyed hunting there.

I guess if you hunt the old river bed east of Ottawa, go an hour north west of the city and you are in to some hilly stuff with lots of deer and bear. I don't know what land goes for in the QC but $50K for 100 acres on this side of the river depending on where you go is definitely reasonable.

The going rate for land in this part of Ontario is twice that, unless you are talking swampland. Northern Ontario is a different story, but the distance starts to become a problem. Just across the river you can find decent land for quite a bit cheaper and much closer.

Just be carefull when you looking up along the River, both sides...the Native Land claim issues are spooking a lot of owners.
