I would think a good place would be the regulations
THINK YOU ARE CONFUSING THIS WITH DEER ?

You always need to check the local bylaws, I am sure there are a few out there that restrict centerfire rifles but still have bear hunts.
That being said, take a look at the hunting regulations first then give a call to the municipal office where you plan to hunt and ask the bylaw people if there is a restriction on firearm type for hunting.
Ontario hunting regs don't restrict weapons for bear that I am aware of. If bear season is open, then its bow/shotgun/rifle - whatever you like, as long as it meets the minimum (i.e. draw weight for bows, shot size for shotguns, and not rimfire for rifle).
HOWEVER - municipalities may have discharge restrictions - and that you will have to check in your municipal bylaws.
Apart from a couple townships in the Wiarton area (no firearm restrictions) there is no bear hunting in southern ontario. So you shouldnt have to worrie about this.

Ok thanks for the replies..just tring to decide if I should look at buying a rifle
If you are looking at owning just one gun then a shotgun would fit the bill better IMO. If you are hunting bear over bait then a shotgun with slugs is ideal plus you can use it for deer, ducks, turkey etc. If your hunting style may include spot and stalk with longer ranges then I would get a rifle.
