I see that my "NEW TO ME" 9.8 merc is sweating a wee wee bit of grease from behind the prop. I'd like to run the girl a season b4 doing water pump, seal, and oil just to make good and sure it even runs right. From an industrial mech back ground a seal that sweat a hair was a good seal. Just watch your levels and go. Anyone see a major there?
If oil is leaking out of the lower unit seal, water will get in. Water in the lower unit is not a good thing. I have always replaced any leaking seals. For sure, make sure there is no water in the lower unit before freeze up again, but I'm sure you know that !
At least pull the prop to make sure there's not a ball of someones monofilament line in there. It can melt so hard that you'd think it was a washer that belonged.

Even if just for piece of mind. He says the 34 yr old water pump pumps fine but I'd be skeptical
34 years ???? I'd be changing that impeller for sure. I change mine at 5 or 6 years. They get brittle and break off.Quote:

If you're really worried about it being a non-runner, wait till you can get it in the water. Take an evening after work, run up and down a local river or something. Then order the parts and do the work. These seals do fail eventually. Should have seen the water that came out of two impeccably maintained outboards I used this summer. Both in fantastic condition and well maintained, both blew prop seals and sucked in water.
Well I changed the pump. 2 blades broke, one cracked. Pretty much pooched. I found a little note buddy left himself that the lower oil was changed in 012. The oil I took out had so little milk to it, the untrained eye may not have noticed. So I re-lubed and closed her up. This will be good enough for me to see if she's a runner. Not hard to pop the seal if I feel like it next winter. THANKS ALL
I've got an old '65 6 HP Evinrude that's been taking up space in my garage for 30 years. Thanks to your thread I've now got a bone to fix the old gal up and give her one more summer chasing fish.
And I can tell you the last thing I need is another darn outboard motor to feed.
