Rant on guiding in Ontario

That's the new thing in the upper ottawa valley. Everybody's a guide. Guide you for deer, fish , you name it. I'll get right to the point. The last few winters have decimated the deer heard at the west end of WMU 59. Is bringing in other shooters to an already hurting population not the same damage as an invasive species? Personally I have had no problem with guides, where required and where the wildlife will absorb the extra hunter. Most provinces have the sense to not even let you come unless you're with a CERTIFIED guide AND their animal population can absorb it. I don't think we're rich enough in resources to be showing others the way , nor should any wing wang be able to do it

So guiding is the problem? Why not just not issue antlerless tags and in some cases make it a draw in system for antlered deer.

Ontario is based on hunt camps, so if you say they need to be certified guides then where is there a line drawn? I know of people that we have known since before I was born hunting with us with no knowledge of the bush and trusting that the camp owners have been scouting, does that make us guides?

I don't see any reason why any American would come up here to hunt deer, with the lack of population and the number of deer in every state adjacent to Ontario having significantly higher numbers and lower costs it would be dumb to come up here unless they are hunting with friends or family anyway.

I don't know if what you feel about it matters or for that matter "ANYONE'S FEELING". The FACT (for what little that's worth) is that it is being done all along the hwy 508 corridor, 511, lanark etc. You make a perfectly good point. It boggles my mind entirely as to why a yank would want to come here, but. They do. All I'm saying is. Our resources aren't rich enough. If you only bought one ham at the store to feed you and your wife I'll bet if. I won't continue. The notion of "TARGET RICH" environments as opposed to hunting in the Sahara just isn't there, and. If it ain't I can't create it. But trust me we're not in Alaska. You know it's not because up there in that target rich environment you still are limited as to who can be a "GUIDE" and how many the area will absorb. Back to your "NO sensible yank" rule. Go up and stop in every hunt camp up say the wabalac rd north shore white lake. Stop and talk to the guys . Tell me how many blue/white plates you see. You don't. Oh hardly a deer there now for ten years not just the last few winters. Wonder why

Have you been to Alaska?

I have been to the Yukon and spent a couple weeks with a former big game guide. They may have many difference species up there but the carrying capacity is significantly less than what we have here in Ontario, there is just not enough food up there to support the animals, the lanark area has tons of food comparatively.

I think that if we have a limit on the number of animals killed it should not matter at all where the hunters come from. I used to hunt that area, the winter is what kicked their butts and now that the numbers are down the number of hunters are down. We only ever knew of one Yank hunting up there, he was from Detroit and was hunting with friends, he never took a bit of meat with him as he hunted for meat back home. I hunted up there for 15 years, I never once saw US plates but I know that the majority of the people hunting were from SW Ontario.

The number of deer is down but it is still significantly higher than it was back in the 70s when my dad started hunting. When the antlerless tag system came in he said he was lucky to see a single set of tracks over a 7 day hunt, now they still start deer every single day with the dogs.

This is a cyclic system, antlerless tag numbers are down now and will remain for a while until the numbers come back.
