Going to be an amazing season
With the woodcock opener time to get serious. Sunny cool forecast had me itching to get out. Just in case birds where scarce brought some insurance. More so to get the dog tuned up as this summer weather really made it a chore to get her out. Plan was simple plant a bird work her a bit in the field to burn off some excess energy than check out the bush to see what is around. Well could of left the pheasant at home as the dog is in prime form. Ended the day all though light in the bag heavy with contact. Dog pointed well 7 -8 woodcock however find #5 was the only one that hit the ground which really I didn't mind missing the rest as they are very thin and unfinished. The big story is the number of grouse contacts. Looks like its another bumper year as moved 14 birds under point. Granted the first point was a covey of 10 that busted in all directions gave the dog and me quite a start. Although the thick bush and understory made for ridiculous shooting it did have the grouse hunkering down rather than run and fly.
