Early December Temagami report
Better late than never .
My Buddy and I took our 2 boys up for a weekend to hike some trails chase grouse and hopefully run into a bunny or 2. The first morning we hit a trail south of town and hiked in about 5Km and saw 6 grouse and managed to pot 1 that my buddies son Russ was able to connect on. A little farther on we also found a bunny playin the "you cant see me if I don't move game" and as hard as I tried to point it out to one of the boys they couldn't spot the little statue so I took the shot and we had a snowshoe as well.
The trail ended at a pretty little lake so we stopped and took a break and had a few snacks before heading back. I think we only saw 2 more grouse on the hike back but they were quick to flush and although we went in looking for them, they vanished.
In the afternoon we hit a couple short trails just north of town where we had great action back in September, we flushed 2 grouse " only heard them flush" and saw one bunny on the run that Russ took a poke at but missed clean. We headed back to camp for a great dinner of venison burgers and Caesar salad with a few adult beverages for the dad's and the kids felt pretty grown up as we let the share a beer between the 2 of them. Needless to say sleep came quick and we were all out by 11.
Next morning found us back south of town where we had better luck the previous morning and on a new trail. We managed to kick up 3 more grouse and again it was Russ that connected with a great shot on a running bird and a little further on it was Jack that spotted the bunny statue at the base of a large maple and he connected with the .22. On the way back out nothing else was seen so we went and hit the same trail from the previous morning.
We managed to see 3 more grouse and Jack had a shot at one trying to sneak away but unfortunately missed and the other 2 were quick to flush and offered no shots. It was getting to be that time we all hate , head back to camp to pack up and head home.
All in all it was a great weekend with a great buddy and 2 fine young men, the birds were skittish compared to earlier in the season as you would expect but the lack of leaves and ground cover it made spotting game easier and the snowshoes were a nice bonus.
Another bonus was the lack of people, we only encountered 1 other hunter ,that coupled with great weather for hiking made for a memorable weekend and it seems that our 2 young hunters are coming along nicely enjoying every minute of it.
