The government announced Friday it will defer the regulations, which were slated to come into force June 1, until the beginning of December 2018.

It said the deferral will provide time needed to propose amendments to the regulations, first drafted in 2004, adding that details would be made available later this month.

The firearms community has long opposed the regulations and continues to "advocate against their coming into force," says an internal note to Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, recently obtained by The Canadian Press through the Access to Information law.

The regulations would require domestically manufactured firearms to bear the name of the manufacturer, serial number, and "Canada" or "CA," while imported guns would have to carry the "Canada" or "CA" designation along with the last two digits of the year of import.

The measures would help Canada meet the requirements of the United Nations Firearms Protocol and a convention of the Organization of American States.

Is the average hunting rifle or target pistol from Canada going to end up in a war in Africa, no? The reason for the delay as I understand is the exceptions to what is marked are unclear.
Some firearms have the serial numbers in places where you must disassemble them, they are exempt.
Some plastic pistols don’t have room to add the required markings are exempt.
The firearm is rare, what is rare, building 10,000 a year, 2,000, what?
The value is high, well that Noranco is an expensive firearm to me.
The movie one kills me, those guys couldn’t care a less if a couple or more stamps are on the firearm, they never use the correct firearm anyway.

(3) In the case of an imported firearm, the Registrar, on application by the individual, business or public service agency that is importing it, shall grant the applicant an exemption from the requirement set out in paragraph (2)(c) if
(a) marking the firearm in a place that is visible only by disassembling the firearm is consistent with the current practices of the manufacturer of that model of firearm;
(b) the firearm does not provide a visible space suitable to stamp or engrave the markings;
(c) the firearm is rare;
(d) the firearm is of a value that is unusually high for that type of firearm and that value would be significantly reduced if the markings were visible without disassembly; or
(e) the firearm is imported by a business that holds a licence for the purpose of using the firearm in respect of motion picture, television, video or theatrical productions or in publishing activities.

Liberals are running scared right now with the rural vote. Since when did this party ever care about the legislation being right. No this is demographics at work with polling showing Trudeaus policies are starting to enrage Canadians. The single biggest factor in the West and Canadian rural votes is Maxine Bernier and his gun platform during the leadership run.

Polling and Demographics matter - ONLY when it is a threat to the ruling Libtards

That's very true, they pulled the wool over the eyes of the voters with promises of 'Sunny Ways' , but now that the shine is off the apple and the honeymoon is over, they have to be more selective in what policy they implement.

In general, there is no gain in support by voters not affected by this policy and the party will only see a loss of voter support by those who are directly affected. So your right Mark, they don't want to 'rock the boat'.

Just wait until all the university and milleneal types and pot heads that voted for the Liberals find out what a bureaucratic cluster fkcu the "legalization" of MJ will turn out to be. If that doesn't drive a huge stake through the heart of JT and the LPOC plans,nothing will.

The Liberals, unlike the previous government, seem committed to bringing these regs into force, so they apparently plan to rewrite the regs to answer industry concerns.

At this point, the only sensible options are to either scrap the regulations entirely (which is out, because Canada is a signatory to the UN agreement), or fix them and bring them into force. These endless deferrals are asinine.
