81A Controlled Hunt
Hunted Tuesday and Wednesday of the controlled hunt this year. Saw and heard the typical things during a southern Ontario controlled hunt. Was heartbroken tuesday night after watching a 150"+ deer respond to my rattle/grunt, only to be distracted by a challenge from a 130"+ deer. They battled it out, and the big guy got cautious and changed his route to come to me. Lost sight of him, and light. Biggest deer I have seen in my life. Must be smart and know how to cross the road around there. Had a doe and fawn pop out last night around 5pm. I shot the doe. I was far off on distance judgement. I thought she was much closer. Turned out to be a 150 meter shot with the Thompson Centre Omega, 250 Shockwave and magnum load. 15 foot drop in elevation helped. The shot hit one lung and took out her spine. Through the scope I could see that she was down. I waited until the end of legal. When I walked up on her, I could see she was spined and struggling. I didn't let her wait anymore to expire.
I was surprised at the lack of deer movement. We had great temperatures, and logic would say the bucks should have been on their feet. Very few shots in the area, and many coyotes around.Attachment 36095
