Traps and trapping questions

Hey folks,
I’ll start with a merry Xmas to everyone. Best wishes for 2018 as well.

Regarding my topic. I’m looking at getting into trapping and had some questions. if there are any trappers or anyone having knowledge on the subject I’d like to hear from you.

Questions:
1. Nowhere on the fur managers site does it mention that snares are eligible for coyote. It only mentions foot hold traps.
2. Nowhere does it mention snaring beaver or leg hold traps. Only connibear traps.
3. Most of the furbearers you cannot use duke traps. It appears that all the stores around here sell Duke.
4. Am I correct in assuming what shows on the site that the approved traps are mandatory. What if you’re trapping coon with duke and obtain a fisher?

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability . 1 Coyote snaring with killing snares is only legal north of the French River. South of the French river you can use relaxing restraint neck snares to protect against non target catches ( namely the neighbours dog) . These snares leave a live coyote to be dispatched same as a leg hold catch or the neighbours dog can be released. There are certain special requirements when using these snares . 2 . Leg hold traps for beaver must be set with a drowning wire set up while the snare sets must be set under water only so are usually used under the ice in the winter . 3 The duke traps do the same job as any of the other connibear traps. They are also the cheaper priced of all of them . 4 . A Fisher in a coon set is a incidental catch but you must report it to the ministry. If you have quota for fisher on your licence it's up to the officer if you get to keep it . Hope this helps . .... Traprdad

Did you get in touch of any local trappers? Do you have access to land to trap?

I was able to chat with a couple guys this summer, there is a course that you need to take, it is supposed to be very practical and teach you how to setup the traps to target only specific animals, they do not have the spec online in Ontario but there are tons of books.

I want to do this now but too many things going on at the moment, maybe next year.

Hello: Check the current trapping regulations and you'll see a lot of your questions are answered there. You can view it at the OFMF site http://www.furmanagers.com/regulations. It also has the most current list of certified traps. Anything listed in phase ( schedule) 1 means that what you see listed are the only traps you can now legally use for the listed furbearer. The phase two lists are certified traps that will become law in the future. They will give trappers a 3 year phase-in time when they decide to add these traps to the list of legal certified equipment. Check regulations for snaring - you'll see it lists under water snaring for beaver, as well as suspended land snares for coyote, fox,wolf. Note the listed townships to be sure it's allowed and note the deer hunt time when they have to be removed in areas where dogs are allowed for deer hunting. There are many townships south of the French River that allow land snaring. eg. Kawarthas - it's legal in all the northern townships. I trap Verulam and Somerville Townships. I cannot land snare in Verulam but I can in Somervile. You also have the RCR option as well (relaxing cable restraint). You check your sets daily and release or dispatch the live caught animal. Restraint is very specific - special lock, length, swivel set-up, loop size, breakaway strength, minimum loop size, etc.
re: legholds for beavers - can use them on a drowner with a one-way slide lock. Animal steps in trap, then dives to safety in deep water. The trap runs down the drowner wire on the slide lock in one direction only. #4 double longsprings and large #5 coilsprings are commonly used for this set, usually on a beaver dam with at least 4 feet of water for the weighted end of the drowner. Can also set legholds under ice for beaver. You can notch a dead log to make a trap platform - place log on an angle - set trap on platform and nail some fresh aspen twigs above it. Beaver steps on the trap while trying to grab the twigs.
Re: Duke - to each his own, but I think they are a POS. Very poor quality when compared to other brands. Cheap welds, lousy spring strength after 2 years use, softer metal in the striking bars. The coilsprings are total garbage. Very poor triggers with stamped metal triggers that are terrible to adjust. Get Bridgers instead for coilsprings. Bridgers or Sleepy CreeK for longsprings. For body grippers, I like Belisle magnums because of the safety that increases safety for the trapper. I also own LDL and Sauvengeau traps that are good quality.
Re: Fisher in Duke. It's pretty tough to keep fisher out of a coon set, and visa versa. If you're trapping an area that has both species, then in the name of animal welfare, you should be using a fisher certified trap as it will be capable of humanely dispatching either animal. Buy yourself some 220 Belisle magnums. It would prob. be at the discretion of a CO inspecting your line. If the CO was convinced that your sets were primarily targeting fisher, then I imagine you could be charged. Would be a tough one to prove.
