If You Hunt In Grey Highlands - Markdale, Flesherton, Eugenia, etc better read this new Bylaw!

This proposed bylaw will change the hunting in the Grey Highlands municipality. For the most part it just bans hunting in areas/towns that you wouldn't consider hunting. The section that caught my eye affects waterfowlers on Eugenia, Wilcox or Irish Lake. No discharge on the open water! Doesn't the MNR regulate hunting on waterbodies?

If you hunt within 500 m of the Rail to Trail that runs from dundalk to Markdale you will be charged. I assume there are landowners along that RTT that hunt, in fact I know there are shooter boxes along the trail.

I was recently looking at hunting a tract in Simcoe forest and took the time to check the bylaws to discover that half the tract is too close to a nearby house in order to have a loaded firearm.

Always good to check the local bylaws!!!

Sad to see this happen. We hunted Lake Eugenia during the waterfowl season for years. I wonder if there is anything that can be done to defend our rights as hunters?

I took 5 minutes and wrote the mayor of Grey Highlands. He said the bylaw has been in place since 2003 and they are merely adding maps for clarification. I mentioned that nobody knew about the bylaw and I wondered if it could be modified. Rather than ban the hunting of waterfowl and tolerating goose poop all summer why not outline areas that are open for hunting as they've done on other lakes in Southern Ontario. I think hunters didn't know about the bylaw and the municipality hasn't enforced it.

BTW This is one of the last municipalities to hold out against Sunday hunting in Grey Bruce. I think it's time some pressure is applied.
