Hey folks,
I recently moved back from Quebec to Ontario and plan to scout up some hunting grounds for this fall. Are there any tools I can use to find out exactly who owns what piece of property, something like a plat map, or do most people just knock door to door and ask?

Most of us would just knock on the door and ask.... Needless to say, be polite, upfront and honest with your intentions. Offer some help and leave contact info whether they say yes or no.
I find you have to get to know people who own land first. Buy their produce, work with them, meet them in social settings, hockey, curling etc and the rest is easy.
I also bought a piece land for an investment and to hunt on. What a great feeling.
There is an app that you can download that gives you this information. huntstand

offer to clean any deadfall you come across from fields and if you do get permission you may want to ask if any other hunters have been given permission to hunt there so you wont disturb or conflict with their hunts, Keep farmers phone number on your cell phone, goes without saying but I'm saying it anyway.. and ask for permission again every year, don't assume that you can bring a friend just because you have permission. Don't leave garbage...pick it up if its there instead and Bring back a turkey breast or a case of beer and thank land owner at end of season. and I am a landowner.. good luck
If you are a member of the OFAH be sure to let them know about your liability insurance coverage. Trust me it makes a difference to some landowners. If you are not a member of the OFAH join! Good luck Paul
I thought the OP was asking how to find who actually owns the land. That is good questions as now the farm house on the land may or may not be the actual owner. I have permission on a property for goose hunting, the owner lives at least 10 miles away. Wouldn't know that except I hunt the field beside and that farmer told be were he lived. I start by asking at the place that looks like if might be the owner, if not ask where they might live. I have actually gotten 2 properties by asking the wrong owner, who didn't want to give the real owner up, but while talking he pointed in the direction, so I went that way and asked.

I had something similar happen to me one time. Asked the tenant for contact info on the owner. Tenant swore up n down that it would be useless to even ask the owner since they wouldnt allow hunting on their land. Went to see owner, introduced my self, they invited me in for coffee and while sitting there, the wife gets a pad out and writes out a letter giving me sole permission. And to top it off, gave me permission to kick anyone else off if I saw them.Quote:
