Ran out of elevation on my scope

First time shooting my new Savage 10ML ii laminate stock with the blued barrel yesterday.

Scope is a brand new Leupold VXR 3x9x40. I used Leupold low split rings to get the scope as close to the barrel as possible. My personal preference.

At 25 yards I was only able to dial it up to 4" low then ran out of elevation adjustment. Really annoying and never had this issue before.

After some internet searching tips I have taken the following actions.

Dumped the low split rings and installed a set of new Leupold PRW medium rings.
Set my elevation back to center by dialing all the way down then counting the total number of turns available. Dialed it back up half way. This re-centered the elevation.

Going to the range again on Friday to see if this helped. Next step would be to ship the rear ring up. I'm holding off on this to see if the new rings will correct it.

Re centering your crosshairs should solve your problem. Remember too, at 25 yds, your bullet is still rising. Sighting a few inches low at 25 yds. should put you dead on at 50 yds. Good luck.

re-center by rotating your scope....take half the error out with every 180...save a lot of wear and tear and counting :)

You have your rings backwards....

i should add that I am just joking... unless you mounted to a rail.

I had one that gave me a real PIA until sky pilot pointed out my rail was backwards - DOH!!!!! LOL

In another thread,someone posted about using a "Mirror Method" to re-center crosshairs that were hopelessly out of alignment. I didn't believe it,so,I tried with an old Bushnell scope I hadn't used in decades exactly for that reason. It involved placing the scope objective against a mirror,finding the "shadow" and aligning the crosshairs with the "shadow". Damned if it didn't work like a charm,so well,in fact,that I mounted it on my Marlin 1895,set up the laser and it was right on. Off to the range it goes.

I do that method. It works like a charm.

Hmm!

I have the 2 piece mounts on the Savage 10ML ii. I will need have a good hard look @ them..

Happy to report that my elevation issues are behind me now.

I reset my scope elevation to zero.
Installed Leupold PRW bases
Installed good quality weaver skeleton rings
Had the gun bore sighted

This is my final 100yard group. ;)

Will continue to practise to ensure I'm dead center before our Hunt in November!!

Lesson learned is beware of the high cost of low quality scope rings and bases... :)

PRW base is all I used now. Good product IMO
