Earlier this week I and a friend did some woodcock hunting just outside of Tillsonburg. The woodcock were around the real issue took place later the next day. I took a look at my lab and removed 9 ticks. I used to hunt near the Long point area for pheasants years ago and eventually got tired of the tick problem. Just a heads up for those of you that hunt in the area. Make sure to check your dog closely for ticks the next couple of days after your hunt.
This area is really tick infested. I did not go deer hunting there this year because of this. Last year got a deer tick attached but thankfully it was negative for Lyme disease.
Check yourself and your equipment CAREFULLY for ticks after every hunt if you hunt there. Better still spray your clothes and equipment with Permetherin (if you can find some). Does not make sense why this is not available in Canada.
As to your dog, it can also get lyme disease, so hope you brought it to a vet. Friend of mine had to pay $1,000 to the vet after a tick on his dog was found positive for Lyme.

I'm down in the Clear Creek area of Norfolk County. The year started off bad with ticks but as the birds migrated through and the temp's soared they pretty much disappeared. Have noticed the odd one as of late but no where near as bad as in spring. Taking precautions such as bug sprays and tucked in pant legs , light coloured clothes so they show up easier and for your dog the Lyme Vaccine is a must. They have tick removal tools now that are more user friendly then just ripping the lil'bugger out of your skin. I've had my share of bites but by finding them right away and removing them immediately there is little cause for alarm as they have not had time to infect you; that is "if" they should be carrying the Lyme disease. Wash the bite and a dab of Polysporin wouldn't hurt either. My question is …. if they have a vaccine for dogs why not humans ?

More importantly check yourself. In Ottawa they found 1 in 3 deer ticks carried lyme. Be especially careful after field dressing or skinning a deer. They usually disappear when it goes to - 4.
Been using Ultra Shield (a horse fly spray sold at TSC stores) for the past 3 years on all our clothing and gear. It contains permethrin, and we haven't had 1 tick on us yet during spring and fall hunting.
Usually only respray everything every 5-6 weeks, as it has a lasting effect.
I just do my spraying outside, and leave everything out to air out for a few hours after spraying, as the Ultra Shield containg citronella, and I want that smell to dissipate off everything.
