Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending a decision by Statistics Canada to compel banks and financial institutions to release the personal transaction data of 500,000 people without their consent.


Conservative House Leader Candice Bergen grilled Trudeau during question period Monday following a report by Global News that revealed Statistics Canada is asking the country’s nine largest banks for the transaction data of 500,000 randomly chosen Canadians, including everything from bill payments to cash withdrawals from ATMs to credit card payments and even account balances.

Without consent. Not true. Read your fine print of your banking disclosure agreements. It states directly in all of them that they may share your banking information with third parties. You’ve already consented by signing on the dotted line and opening an account with them.

Hold on ... first, I believe they put the purpose of sharing into context ... for credit approvals, etc. They cannot just free hand info to anyone. Second, we have laws that over-ride ANY terms and conditions sent out, and the right to privacy is a constitutional right ... no one can over-ride that right. So if it is proven that there was no good reason to share the data, and it infringed on someone's constitutional right, I think a class action law suit may be in order. I am not a lawyer, but I do read and negotiate contracts ... I would like to hear from a lawyer on this one.
