Hey All,
Does anyone have a source/place someone can send in deer hides for tanning, and have some possible leatherwork done.
Has anyone done this? or do most people just skin and throw away? seems like a waste to me, but have not found a source, and that is what usually happens :(
I wanted to put feelers out there for this year, as I would like to not waste the hide.
It would most likely need to be in the SW Ontario region. Or possibly Parry Sound Area.

While the hats for hides depots do make use of your hide, the bulk of the hides are simply sold to China and not given to First Nation groups as was the original intent of the program.Quote:

Personally I think its a decent programme and well worth our support, when I went into their updated website you actually get two hats for a adult Moose skin and one for a calf.
I would suggest you look into area indigenous communities, it's not unusual for them to do hides and clothing. For instance, in this area there is an Inuit lady who sells hand made Parkas, mitts etc and I've seen her posts offering to take hides from local hunters. She even offered lessons.Quote:

I took an Elk hide to Whites Tanning after an Alberta hunt in 2011. I never received a call back. I made a few follow up calls, with zero results. In 2014, I gave up trying and wrote it off. I'm hoping this was a one off for them, as they came highly recommended.
I take my deer hides to Atlas Tanning in Blyth. They are located behind the Old Mill. I have taken a number of hides there over the years, and have yet to be disappointed. However, they won't do larger hides such a elk or moose. I'm not sure about bear. They say that you will always receive your own "hair on hide" back. However can't gaurantee it with doe/ buckskin.
Also, while you are there you could stop in at the Cowbell Brewery for good food and beer.
I believe Rockwood has stopped deer hide tanning for rug(hide on)quite some time ago.Mostly due of passing away a person who was doing it or something like that.They were really good,and i was never disappointed with them at the time they were doing it.It took 1-2 years to get it done,but i hallways got mine hide back.Try to call ,but do not be dissapointed because likely they will not do it.
