Deer Cart

I used a Cabelas deer cart yesterday and it worked very well. I tried to buy one for my son and I noticed they've gone with pins for the tires instead of nuts on the end of the axle. Can't say I'm a fan of pins in thick brush!

Just wondering if anyone else uses a game cart and if so how you like it and where did you get it? Sasquatch in BC sells what appears to be the cadillac of game carts but I'm sure it's out of my price range.

I/we use the cheap plastic toboggans sold at CTC. load the deer into it and they pull very easy over all kinds of terrain as plastic is very slippery., down hill they just go by themselves over wet grass and leaves, no effort at all.
Cheap ratchet straps do a great job of holding the deer in.

I'll preface this in general terms; it may depend on where/ how you hunt.

If there is no snow and you pulling by hand, the carts are easier. If you hauling with an ATV then sleds are better regardless of snow or not, especially if your traversing water.

We tried a cart at camp one year..it failed miserably, mainly because most of our deer are shot in the bush and trying to haul them out over fallen tress and branches was just more work that it was worth. If you hunt fields and just need it to carry to the truck, the cart would work great.

I've used an Otter sled for years....it floats as most of the areas I hunt are wet. (see below).

My game cart is a life-saver! I hunt farm country and let me tell you dragging a deer a few thousand yards to the truck is no picnic even with a sled. I'll never forget my first crossbow kill & the 3 hour drag back to the truck... OUCH!!

I leave it in my truck for the entire season... :)

What cart do you recommend there belleriver? Thanks

Attachment 38167This is the one I use from cabelas a few years ago. I' M 71 YEARS YOUNG AND HAVE NO PROBLEM HAULING DEER OUT OF FEILDS. never had to take one out of a wooded area though, a sled may be better for there,

I have the same one... except for the size of the deer in it.

I do hunt the woods. I have wide trails in my bush, created when the bush was logged, I keep these trails open... deer use them like a highway. I will drag the deer close to one of these trails or the edge of the bush and then put it on the cart. Occasionally I have had to use the cart away from a trail, it is hard doing so alone, the large wheels give some clearance but getting up and over logs can be difficult, best one wheel at a time, or have a buddy assist you. With the cart you have to go around some deadfalls; but it's still easier than dragging.

I have also used it to haul waterfowl decoys and blinds into a field when motorized vehicles were either not allowed or field conditions did not permit.

I have recently purchased a side by side; but will not give up my cart.

I have both, but I find the plastic sled works better for me, easier to slide up and over logs and such, then when I get to my vehicle the whole works just goes into the back.

I also use Pelican sled

Like Judge, I'm 71, and was thinking seriously last year about buying a cart, but couldn't really justify the expense for a once-a-year event. I had an old plastic ice sled, and had read that people were using them to haul out deer, so took it with me last year. Used it to haul my deer out of a wooded area, through a small ravine, and over a partially-downed old fence with very little difficulty! It will be a regular piece of equipment on every deer hunt from now on.
