Headed up to stay at the Wharf in Gravenhurst with the families over March break.
What are the ice conditions like on Muskoka this year? We may tour around on the sleds (nothing crazy as wives and kids will be with us) but would like to know if there are any areas that always should be avoided or that are just bad this year etc.
Also, if we wanted to try and get into some perch for the kids, any spots in and around that south end worth punching a hole?

I cant specifically speak to Lake Muskoka as I havent been on it yet this winter but in general theres plenty of ice this year around Muskoka. Avoid the obvious areas (channels with current, choke points etc). Watch for open water around boat houses that have bubblers going.
The perch fishery is pretty minimal on that lake, I think you'll have a tough go of it. Walleye and pike close on the 15th, so depending on when your march break is you may make it. That would be my target.
EDIT - Pike is open to the 31, so you'll definitely make that season.
thanks saber....I just heard about the accident on Muskoka so obviously some areas to be careful of (I think it was at the narrows specifically)
