6 arrested with semi-auto rifle

6 charged in Toronto after police seize semi-automatic rifle, ammunition - seized a Glock 9 mm semi-automatic rifle.

I was reading up on this headline, this appears to be the firearm in question. The firearm apparently was stolen, and none of the six had a firearm licences. My puzzlement is it’s classification and the fact it has an over capacity magazine I know there are a few firearms with over capacity magazines that rate an over capacity magazine exemption, I can’t imagine how this one made that list? However, although seems a bit low powder for big game, it might make a great little rifle for small game, with the added advantage of having a center-fire cartridge that can be reloaded.

Generally, it’s not the firearm that determines what the magazine capacity is, it’s what firearm the mag is designed for. The mag was designed for the glock pistol, thus the 10 round capacity.
The same issue allows a 10 round LAR mag, to be used in the Benelli MR1.

I almost bought one of those at gun show had two clips Like new $600.
Figured Trudeau would take something like that away so I walked

That seems to make sense, but I looked up the Benelli MR1 and it appears to be marketed with a 5-round STANAG magazine (Standard), which would comply with the Firearm Act magazine limit for centre-fire semi-auto's. Does the JR magazine not have to be pinned or does it have an exemption under the Act? It seems to be marketed with a 10 round magazine, as a non-restricted firearm??

The mag does not need to be pinned because it’s designed for the Glock pistol.
The LAR mags were designed for that pistol, but fit in the Benelli MR1.

When I purchased mine I was told because the mag was designed for a Glock, it is legal. They are a very fun gun to shoot but I personally would not consider it for hunting. They are available in 9mm, 40 cal and 45 cal.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but what you seem to be saying is that the JR 9 mm Glock rifle that is part of the news release I was referring to, garners an exemption under the Firearm Act, it being a centre-fire semi auto rifle that has a magazine that hold in excess of 5 rounds. Also it is classed as a non-restricted firearm as far as marketing is concerned. If that is the case, it should make one heck of a rabbit and small game rifle.

No, the gun is never restricted to magazine length, the magazine is what is limited. The gun is not prohibited if it has a magazine that is over capacity, the magazine itself is what is prohibited.

For example, a pistol magazine is limited to 10 rounds for the caliber it is designed for. If you make a non-restricted firearm that can take a pistol magazine that is limited to 10rds then you can legally use that. This is the case with the LAR pistol magazines in a rifle or any of these pistol magazine carbines. You can also use cartridges in a magazine that do not match the marked caliber, so you can use a 5rd 50 Beowolf magazine and put almost 18rds of 223 in it.

The same works in reverse as seen with the 10/22 platform. Since the Charger pistol has been in existence the 10/22 rifle 10+ magazines can be used in that pistol and therefore are prohibited as they can work in the pistol. Pistols do not have a difference between rimfire and centerfire as is the case with rifles.

Here is a good read that explains it yet they seem to say that the butler creek 10/22 25rd mags are legal but they are not anymore, they need to be pinned to 10rds.

I personally think that the mag limit should be made 10 across the board for everything centre fire. We have had 10 round pistol mags used in rifles for as long as the law as it is now has existed and without any issues. While many people agree mag limits are dumb anyway, a 10 round for the gun you are using it in limit would be simpler for owners and police.

I hope you mean semi autos only, a 10rd mag limit would make a number of rifles prohibited without heavy modifications.

The Liberals will never make the magazine capacity larger, never going to happen.

The reason for the rules are with respect to standard magazine capacities. Rifles used for hunting almost always max out at 5rds, extended magazines are not something normally found in the field so this is why that number was used. 10rd capacity in pistols would not interfere with competition and worked around the most standard capacity for both semi auto and revolvers. The largest 22LR revolver capacity that I know of is 10rds, so not plugging on a revolver would be necessary as every revolver would be 20rds or less.
